News and Announcements

Dear Members of the Philosophical Studies SIG,

We hope you are staying well this summer. We are writing with a couple of SIG announcements.

Welcome New Graduate Student Appointees

We are excited to welcome two new graduate students to our SIG team. Elias Hage will serve a two-year term as Webmaster, and Jessica Lussier will serve a two-year term as Equity and Diversity Digital Resource Manager. Thanks to Jessica and Elias!

Call for Nominations

The Philosophical Studies in Education SIG at AERA is accepting nominations for SIG officers. Officer positions offer a great opportunity to get more involved in the SIG and develop relationships with other SIG members. Please send us good candidates, or let us know if you might be interested!

We have three open positions:

  1. Secretary/Treasurer (Two-Year Term): The Secretary/Treasurer is responsible for managing and reporting on financial accounts of the SIG and the safekeeping of financial documents.

  2. Communications Director (Two-Year Term): The Communications Director will use online communication to keep members informed of SIG activities and promote the interaction of SIG members between meetings.

  3. Graduate Student Representative (Two-Year Term): The Graduate Student Representative shall be responsible for assisting with the organization of graduate student events and community-building activities for graduate student SIG members.

AERA policy requires that all elections be competitive, so there must be two or more candidates for each office. Candidates must be current members of the SIG and AERA to serve as an officer.

If you are interested in running or would like to nominate someone, please send the following information to Rebecca Taylor at rmt@illinois.edu.

  • The candidate’s full name

  • The institutional affiliation

  • Email address

  • A biographical statement of up to 200 words.

All nominations should be received by October 1, 2021. Rebecca is also available to respond to any questions about the positions.

Best regards,

Rebecca Taylor, SIG Chair

Cara Furman, Program Chair

Nicolas Tanchuk, Communications

Liz Jackson, Treasurer

Dear colleagues,

We hope you are enjoying the spring! It was wonderful to see so many of you at AERA 2021. We are writing with a few updates as we begin preparation for AERA 2022.

  • New Officers

  • Upcoming SIG Event

  • Call for Reviewers

  • Call for Teaching Resources

New Officers

First, we’d like to congratulate Rebecca Taylor on her excellent work as Program Chair this past year and thank Paula McAvoy, who has completed her term as SIG Chair, for her service. Rebecca is now the Chair of the SIG, taking over from Paula. We’d like to welcome Cara Furman, who will be the Program Chair for AERA 2022 and 2023 and will move into the Chair role for 2024-2025.

Upcoming SIG Event

Second, we will be hosting an event titled “The Life of an AERA Presentation” Tuesday, May 25, 2021, 7-8 pm Eastern (see attached poster for details on registration). This free event will feature a panel discussion with SIG leadership focused on:

  • Crafting a successful AERA proposal

  • Understanding presentation formats

  • Developing AERA presentations into journal articles

The event is open to all; current SIG membership not required. Please share with graduate students, early career scholars, and any others who would like to get to know the SIG better. The event link is: https://illinois.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZcvd--rqDIqHN1-TRuvwoad2sjDXAS_YZrz

Call for Reviewers

Third, we’d like to encourage you to volunteer as a review for AERA 2022. To sign-up to review proposals please use the AERA portal to indicate interest by May 20, 2021. We aim to keep the reviewing load to 5-8 proposals per person, and to realize that goal, we need you! Reviewing is also a great way to get to know the work of the SIG better. Thank you for considering offering this service to the SIG.

Call for Teaching Resources

Fourth, we’d like to encourage you to submit teaching resources on racial and social justice and that support the diversification of syllabi in the philosophy of education. We plan to share an updated database of resources periodically through future newsletters. Please find a Google Form to submit resources here.

As always, thank you for your contributions to the SIG. The vitality of the field and the presence of Philosophy of Education at AERA is a product of your effort!

Sincerely,

Rebecca Taylor, Chair Cara Furman, Program Chair Liz Jackson, Treasurer Nic Tanchuk, Communications
